Basic Black Slacks
Say that 5 times fast! Your black slacks are the building blocks of your professional wardrobe. They're the perfect backdrop for any style or color of shirt, blouse, or sweater. So finding the perfect pair of slacks can be daunting but it will pay off. You can't just go to the black pants rack at the store. First and foremost you need to find out what style and cut of pants work best for your shape. Quality is a must! The black slacks are going to be your most worn item so make sure that you're choosing a brand that is durable and that you trust. Comfort is also the key when choosing work clothes. You will be in spending 8-10 hours a day in them so you want to avoid pants that are too tight or uncomfortable. The basic black rule also applies to your basic black skirt or, dress code permitting, some basic black capris for summer.
The Art of Layering
By truly mastering the art of layering you can turn 5 pieces of clothing into 10 or 20 different outfits. After you have invested in your basic blacks, it's time to have some fun with colors. This is where your own personal style comes into play. When shopping for your work wardrobe, look for items that give you options. For example a blue button up shirt that you can wear alone or with a white camisole underneath. Or a black sweater with a plunging neckline you can wear alone or with a red lacy cami underneath for splash of color. Accessories play a BIG role in layering. For example when you wear your black sweater/red cami combo you can pick up on that red and go for bold red earrings to complete the ensemble.
The Blazer
Also another great layering item, the blazer is one of those must haves for professional Diva's. The blazer turns you from business causal to professional dress in 2.5 seconds, no phone booth required. Great to have on hand for that last minute client meeting, or that business lunch with the top dogs. Most blazers work best in black, but when choosing color make sure you know what colors work best for you, and go with your judgment.
Modest is Hottest
While Diva's aren't afraid to show the world what they got, the workplace can be brutal and being too revealing can inadvertently hurt your career. So be familiar with your company's dress code. Avoid super plunging necklines, spaghetti strap tops, and too short skirts. If your employer doesn't have a dress code try to remember how you were asked to dress in school, skirts and shorts at finger tip length, etc. Becoming familiar with the company dress code is also helpful if what you're wearing is tasteful but not permitted. Most people won't make a fuss about it but it may secretly be hurting your career.
